The EX150 was available a few years later, probably 1979 to 1981. I got this one for Christmas as well, 1980 I think. The components in this kit are encapsulated in little green transparent cubes (the bigger components such as transformer and switch are in double cubes). The bottoms of these cubes are open so that you can see the components inside and repair/replace if necessary. Two, three or four sides of the cube have metal strips on them so that when they are placed next to other cubes they make an electrical connection. There are also metal strips around the edge of the area which give connections to the battery, ferrite aerial/tuning capacitor, potentiometer and audio amplifier. The inbuilt amplifier gives much more gain than was possible in the previous kits above. This made it easier to get a good radio circuit working. The amplifier is built around an LM386 I.C. The unit runs on 4xAA cells giving 6V total. Some experiments require the use of an earphone or microphone. These had a narrow strip of metal on each wire so that they could be slotted in between cubes to make a connection. Here is a link to the EX150 manual. gakken_ex-150_english
